Total Time: 1 hour 35 mins

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 pie crusts (homemade or store-bought)
  • 8 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (about 8 medium apples)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Coarse sugar for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Roll out one of your pie crusts and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.
  3. In a large bowl, toss together the sliced apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust, making sure to spread it out evenly.
  5. Dot the top of the apple mixture with pieces of butter.
  6. Roll out the second pie crust and place it on top of the apple mixture. Use a knife to trim the excess crust around the edges.
  7. Use a fork to crimp the edges of the pie crust together.
  8. Cut a few slits in the top of the pie crust to allow steam to escape.
  9. Brush the top of the pie crust with the beaten egg, and sprinkle coarse sugar over the top.
  10. Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling and the crust is golden brown.
  11. Let the pie cool for at least 1 hour before slicing and serving.
  12. Enjoy your classic apple pie!
